30th Jul, 2018
As Indians, we are always waiting for two things. Acche Din and an India vs Pakistan cricket match. While we might have to wait a little more for the former, the latter is just months away from happening. And the venue for the cardinal event in UAE, while the tournament is Asia cup 2018.
Asia Cup is a major cricket tournament that occurs every two years. The biennial tournament will take off from 15 September and have Bangladesh and Sri Lanka face each other in the opening game. With India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan being the top five teams, the sixth spot is still up for grabs and the teams fighting for it will be UAE, Singapore, Oman, Nepal, Malaysia and Hong Kong.
Six teams overall
Group A consists of India, Pakistan and the qualifier while Group B consists of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. The top two teams from both the groups will qualify for the Super 4 group, where each team will play the other three teams. The top two teams from the Super 4 group will play the final on 28 September.
India to play consecutive ODIs
India is scheduled to play two ODIs on two consecutive days. The first ODI is against the qualifier team and the second is against Pakistan on September 19. Cricket maniacs from both the countries have already marked the date and are looking forward to the much-awaited clash. The best part about this year’s Asia Cup is the number of matches it has. If all works out well, India could play their arch-rivals as many as three times in the Asia Cup. An Indo-Pak match is always a feisty one, with fans from both countries screaming their hearts out. The political tensions between the two countries have reduced the cricket matches between the two sides to only ICC events. Such is the rivalry between these two that the fans might be okay if their country loses the cup at once, but they dare lose to each other.
Indians are the defending champions and will look to up the ante with their game, but there are other teams vying for the cup too.
