The Kangaroos are a formidable team. They have the girth to challenge any team in the world. This all started in the year 1987, when one among the cricketing great of Australia, Alan Border lifted the Reliance World Cup. The shrewd captain that he was, he used his skills and his arsenal in bowling very well. McDermott, the then fast bowler returned with excellent figures.
After tasting blood, in this tournament, Aussies never looked back. They lifted the Cup a record five times so far.
The world cup’s first two finals was won by the then mighty West Indies in the year 1975 and 1979.
Australia (1999, 2003 and 2007) are the only teams to have won consecutive titles. They again won in 2015 as well.
Australia has played in seven of the eleven finals (1975, 1987, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2015). England has yet to win the World Cup, but has been runners-up three times (1979, 1987, and 1992).
Aussie team this year is strengthened by the return of the prodigal sons, Steve Smith and David Warner. Both were banned for a year for ball tampering. As, thy show cased in the IPL’s
This season, they both have not lost their steam!
The quickies are also raring to go. Adam Zampa has become a double edged sword. Can’t compare him with Shane Warne though, but definitely a chip of the old block.
The world cup team is as under. In the fifteen there are 4 openers.
Aron Finch (Capt), Jason Behrendorff, Alex Carey (wk), Nathan Coulter-Nile, Pat Cummins, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Kane Richardson, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa.
Mitchell Starc is another successor to Glen McGrath. He, on his day can destroy any attacking batsman. Usman Khawaja is an Australian born son of migrant parents.. We have seen his attacks on many fast bowlers of the world. The challenge would be to rotate the four openers. Finch will have a tough time with team selection.
Recently heard, Pat Cummins was praised by many ex-cricketers of Australia. He can swing the ball both ways. He has a slower deceiving ball. He has bouncers and is a master with reverse swing!!
Nathan Lyon has troubled the batsman world over again and again. He is a Lion on the field. Glen Maxwell is an All-rounder, bowls with great chutzpah and is an aggressive batsman, a great Finisher. A match winner in his own right! Nathan Coulter- Nile is also an emerging fast bowler whom the batsmen world over are careful.
Australian team’s selectors are very intelligent in selecting their teams. Always they go for the balancing act. Their bench strength is also great. The wickets in England are bouncy and with the old ball spinners can have a ball.
Moreover, the Aussies are well versed with the English wickets.
Now wonder, can’t push the Aussies to the wall. They will be coming with hammer and tongs right at you!!
If Australia lifts the Cup this time, then it is a sixth time all over.
But, as the pundits say there are at least three teams who will fight ruthlessly this time for the cup. England, India and South Africa.
Nothing to take away from other competing teams although.
